My Philosophy of Teaching explains my thoughts on teaching, including what it means to be an affective instructor. Making progress in teaching students is important to me, and I think that this includes a combination of understanding how students learn, teaching methods that work, and how to understand a diverse student population.
My Philosophy of Teaching
A teaching philosophy is important in providing knowledge to students in the classroom, and also for shaping the proper attitude that allows one to answer questions and form a nurturing learning environment. I feel that all measures should be taken by an instructor to make sure that students are learning. I think that a good foundation in interacting with other people is important, and although a teaching philosophy is essential, I also feel that teaching experience will change the way one behaves. I would think that every year as an instructor will allow one to build upon experiences, and by working with those from various cultures, an instructor may better understand how to teach a diverse student population. It is my belief that some subjects may take more time to understand, and based on the material the instructor is teaching, it may require a different teaching method. The instructor should select a teaching style based on the material they are teaching. There may be universal qualities, such as the establishment of learning objectives, encouraging learning and positive change, and allowing students to have an opportunity for discussion, however one style of teaching may not be appropriate for every class.
Those who teach should be open to changes, so that the instructor will have a positive influence on students. All students have goals and a reason for enrolling in a course. An instructor should have their own goals for teaching a course, and these goals should be related to helping students to learn and grow within a subject matter. From my understanding, there are various teaching methods. Based on who the instructor is teaching, a method may have to be changed, because not all students learn the same way. I have always believed that it is an essential for an instructor to realize that every student is unique and many students may learn differently than their peers.
I think it is an instructor’s responsibility to take measures to help all students to learn, and to work with every student on an individual basis. As long as one is using critical thinking and attempting to teach students using methods that bring forth successful results, I think that an instructor has great credibility, and they may be considered a successful teacher. I also feel that every teacher has an obligation to students to express ideas and beliefs related to education through behavior, and that through philosophy a teacher can express these areas. It is not enough to teach the material if the students are not grasping the essential concepts of a course. I seek to place great emphasis into explaining the material, and to use assessments in order to assure that students are making progress.
